Swimming
Swimming, in your own lane.
We swim in the pool, in lanes by level. If you can swim a few lengths, you can come.
How to start
Swim a length, rest at the wall, repeat. Getting your breathing steady is the real work of the first weeks; speed comes later.
Before open water, make sure you are comfortable in the pool — open-water sessions always have a coach.
What the pace groups mean
Lanes are split by how long you take to swim 100 metres, for example 2:30. Not sure? Start in the slowest lane.
Keep to the right, and tap the feet of the swimmer in front if you want to pass.
What you need
- A swimsuit and a cap
- Goggles
- A towel and flip-flops
Fins and kickboards are usually provided by the pool.
Common mistakes
- Holding your breath. Breathe out slowly through your nose under water.
- Lifting your head. Keep it level and your legs will not sink.
- Speeding up before warming up. Keep the first 200 metres easy.
